Next Wednesday is the Winter Solstice, aka Midwinter’s Night, the shortest day/longest night of the year. The many songs and dances that must have accompanied the long tradition of rituals and celebrations around this moment – of great importance in preindustrial culture – have been largely eclipsed in modern culture by Christmas music. Today’s show attempts to navigate around the Christmas music that dominates the airwaves this month, looking for songs and tunes in a midwinter theme.
