Ronnie Drew, leader of the seminal Irish group The Dubliners, passed away last Saturday. One tribute article is here, but there are probably many more. “Famed for a voice described as sounding like coal being crushed under a door…”

Regular listeners of Oak & Thorn will recognize that voice on such songs as “Whiskey on a Sunday,” Seven Drunken Nights,” “Black Velvet Band,” and especially “Whiskey in the Jar.”

Drew was one of those rare folk musicians who become a living legend. Adulation for his uncompromising style, talent, and personality culminated last January with a performance of “The Ballad of Ronnie Drew” by an ensemble cast including Bono, Sinead O’Connor, Shane MacGowan, and a host of musicians including the surviving members of The Dubliners (beards intact).

“The Best of the Original Dubliners [3CD Box set]” is a great compilation of their music, including a number of live tracks. Some of the best Irish music ever made.
