Welcome to the Oak & Thorn Website. Here we post playlists from the show, information about the artists and music, and links to sources for CDs or more information. Eventually I hope to have this page linked directly from the KZYX website for your convenience. Please leave comments to let me know if you are finding the page and if you find it useful.
Oak & Thorn is a weekly program of Celtic music, airing every Sunday morning from 9 to 11 Pacific time (that’s 1700-1900 GMT). The program is broadcast on radio stations KZYX and KZYZ in Mendocino County and surrounding areas of northern California. It is also Webcast live. Colleen Bassett, who originated this program, hosts on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. Tim Bray hosts on 1st and 3rd Sundays. (We flip a caber to determine who’s up on 5th Sundays.)
We present a wide variety of music within the “Celtic” genre, from pure traditional to the most modern contemporary sounds. In addition to the music, we occasionally offer information about the artists and/or the culture from which this wonderful music springs. We use this blog to offer more detailed information about the music and the culture, in the hope that this will enhance your enjoyment of the show. Please let us know how we are doing, and thanks for visiting!

From left: Duncan Chisholm (fiddle, replacing the late Johnny Cunningham), Andy M. Stewart (vocals), John McCusker (fiddle – it takes two incredible fiddlers to replace Johnny), Phil Cunningham (whistle), Gordon Jones (guitar).

But Barack’s as Irish
As was JFK
His granddaddy’s daddy
Came from Moneygall
A small Irish village
Well known to you all
Toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a lama
There’s no one as Irish
As Barack O’Bama
He’s as Irish as bacon
And cabbage and stew
He’s Hawaiian he’s Kenyan

If he succeeds
And he has a chance
I’m sure our Barack
Will do Riverdance
Toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a lama

Hi Tim and Colleen
Yes, the website is appreciated – as is the show, of course. I use the play list to identify favorites if I don’t catch the name.
